Language Arts
We will be using a literacy program called “Daily Five”. You can learn more about it by going to the website www.thedailycafe.com. Basically, the students are encouraged to take control of their language based learning through a series of five daily choices. These five options are Read to Self, Read to Someone, Writing, Word Work, and Listening to Reading. This will allow the students to be engaged in independent learning so I can work with students individually or in small groups to address their specific learning needs more appropriately. Additionally, the students are taught reading and writing strategies each day that will ultimately lead them to become more successful readers and writers. As a class, we will be working on specific and explicit phonemic and phonological awareness all year long.

Reading
Please read with your child daily! There is no better predictor to reading success than reading at home with your child. Each month, I will send home a reading calendar. Have your child colour or check off any day where they do read at home. At the end of the month, return the form to school and students will earn "book bucks" based on how much they read! 7 days of reading earns 1 book buck, and the whole month of reading earns 5 book bucks! Once a month, students will be able to shop from our Book Buck Boxes to choose a prize, or they can save their book bucks for the next month and earn a larger prize. Use books from home or books from school.
Spelling
As part of our Word Work in language arts, we will have weekly spelling lists and tests. I will use the same program that Mrs. Duke and I used last year (Words Their Way), so hopefully this will be familiar for you and your child. The new word list will be printed every Friday in your child’s agenda, and spelling tests will be on Thursdays each week. It is important that your child knows how to spell and read the words each week.

Mathematics
We will be starting the year with a general review of reading, writing and drawing numbers. Our next unit will be about patterns, and then we will then move into measurement, 2-D shapes/3-D objects, and eventually data analysis. Throughout these units students will be practicing their overall number sense, including basic addition and subtraction. Students will have a chance to practice their skills in a variety of ways, including pencil-paper tasks, whole group activities, and partner/small group games.

Religion
Our focus this year is "God is in our hearts." We are partaking in a three-year faith plan called "Arise! Pilgrims of Hope."
Religious education is an essential and integral part of the life and culture of a Catholic School. Like all schools, the Catholic school intends to promote the student’s development towards full adulthood.
